If you are looking for a totally Instagram worthy spot this summer put Peek-a-Boo on your list. Crinoid fossil from the Jurassic period… known as the Star Fossil Please note, taking them as souvenirs is prohibited. If you are lucky enough to find them, please take nothing more than a photo. Sometimes the fossils are visible to the naked eye, but other times they reveal themselves when you pour water over the stones in which they are embedded. These fossils are what locals call “star rocks” and they are crinoids from the Middle Jurassic period in Southern Utah. Toward the end of the canyon, if you look very closely in the rocks, you will find some very cool fossils embedded in rocks. And trust me when I say, these photos don’t do it justice. Once you get to Peek-a-Boo here’s what you will behold. Their Polaris RZRs are more nimble in the sand than any 4x4s, so getting stuck isn’t an issue. If you’re being guided by Kanab Tour Company that isn’t a worry. On my first trip to Peek-a-Boo my brother got stuck in his 4×4 because he didn’t “air down” his tires enough and slowed down in a deep sandy spot. ![]() It’s a bit hard to get to unless you have an off-road vehicle such as a 4×4 or ATV because of the sand trails you need to travel and even if you have a 4×4 or ATV it does help to have a tour guide for your first time. Sometimes known as Red Canyon, Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon is conveniently located within minutes of downtown Kanab, right up the highway. These are companies we know about, but there may be others if you check TripAdvisor, Google, Yelp, etc.Īny way you choose to get to Peekaboo, it is sure to be a fun adventure and well worth your time.Peek-a-Boo Slot Canyon Tour – Some Recent Photos You could try Kanab Western Adventures, Kanab Tour Company, Dreamland Safari, Forever Adventure Tours, Coral Cliffs Tours, or Windows of the West Hummer Tours. ![]() Tours – if you don’t have an ATV or a 4WD vehicle, or you don’t want to chance getting stuck out here, there are several tour companies that will bring you to the canyon safely. If you want to rent an ATV, try Kanab Tour Company, Loop SXS, or Kane County Off Road. But as long as you use common sense and be aware of your surroundings, you will have a fun ATV ride. We’ve seen people blow tires and break belts on their machine because they were not paying attention. It is much easier on an ATV, but you still need to be aware how to drive in deep sand. Every day, people drive here in their AWD and even 4WD vehicles and get stuck, requiring an expensive tow truck call. You can also get there in a good 4WD vehicle, but you will need to know how to drive in deep sand. The wash is usually dry, but you don’t want to get stuck in the area when rains roll in.ĭriving – our preferred method of accessing Peekaboo is on an ATV. Note: always keep an eye on the weather because this is a flash flood area. You will be hiking through sand dunes, which can be somewhat deep, and along a wash. The hike to the canyon is 8.7 miles round trip and is completely in the sun so be prepared with plenty of water and snacks. ![]() Hiking – The trailhead is located 9 miles north of Kanab, off of Highway 89. There are a few options for getting to Peekaboo Canyon: hiking, on an ATV or other 4WD vehicle, or with a tour and I will say a little bit about each method. Although it’s not a long canyon, it is beautiful and can provide a refreshing break from the heat. The canyon is ½ mile long, with red sandstone walls up to 100 feet high. This is a short but fun slot canyon that is not usually crowded, making it fun for ages young and old. On maps you will probably find it labeled Red Canyon, but to locals it is just Peekaboo. This story is going to talk about a slot canyon just about 9 miles north of Kanab. Southern Utah actually has more than one “Peekaboo Canyon”.
